Grand Canyon Chapter #4, Flagstaff

Kathy Lindstrom, PM, Reporter

Recently while reading a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the “Little House” books, I discovered that she was an active member and Past Matron of Eastern Star. Her mother, Carolyn, and sister, Carrie, were also active in the Order, with Carrie being a member for more that 50 years. Other well-known names you might recognize that were members of our Order include Clara Barton, nurse and founder of the American Red Cross; former first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt; and Dale Evans, entertainer and wife of Roy Rogers. You might be able to add other famous names to this list, and I would welcome hearing these from you.

If you are in our area, please join us for any of our meetings, beginning at 7:30 pm.

Recently Don cleaned out the Treasurer’s desk in the Lodge room and found some old histories of our Chapter. Some items caught my attention that I had read before in reading over old minutes, but might be of interest to our new members and to members of the Lodge.

The cornerstone of the Flagstaff Masonic Tem-ple was laid on October 7, 1917. Over the next 10-12 years the Eastern Star Chapter purchased $1,200 of bonds on the building and destroyed the same. $1,200 may not sound like a lot to us, but in the teens and twenties, it was a sizable amount. In June 1933, the Chapter started donating to the Lodge $10 a month to help pay for the building, and continued to do so until June 1940, when the Masons told us the Temple was fully paid for, and we should not donate any more. And, as we worked in the kitchen on the last luncheon I was reminded that the sterling silver, which is still in the cabinet despite the Rainbow Girls trying to give it away several years back, was purchased by the Chapter in 1910, and in 1932 we purchased enough white dishes to serve 175. Many of these plates are still in regular use, so I guess we more than got our $131 worth. Many items like these show our long history and close ties with our Masonic members.

Sister Lois Davis is very ill. She was unable to come to the meeting Tuesday night. She has bronchitis and difficulty with lungs. As all of you know when she can't attend a meeting she is very sick. I'm sure she would like to get cards and calls. She needs cheering up.

Grand Canyon Chapter #4, Flagstaff

Kathy Lindstrom, PM, Reporter

Think back 70 years to the Grand Chapter session of April 1938, the presiding Worthy Grand Matron was Ann Kelly, a member of Grand Canyon Chapter #4. From all accounts I have read she was an exemplary Eastern Star member, serving her Chapter and Grand Chapter as an officer, protem, and committee member. To say Ann was an active member in her Chapter would be an understatement. Even after she and her husband were transferred to Phoenix she was a regular at the Flagstaff meetings and with her correspondence.

The interesting thing I discovered while reading the minutes of our Chapter was that Ann Kelly wanted in the worst way to be a member of our Order and persevered through 7 years of petitioning and being rejected before she was elected to receive the degrees of our Order. I can only assume this was a personal vendetta on some member(s) part, as no moral reason has been found in my research.

It just goes to show us all not to judge others; we never know who will turn out to one of our most outstanding members.

If you are in our area, please join us for any of our meetings, beginning at 7:30 pm.

February 12– Stated meeting
February 26 – Stated meeting, honor our PMs and PPs
March 11 – Stated meeting, honor sideliners and protems

A new year, maybe now is the time to get involved. If this is something you've been telling yourself you'll do one day, maybe you should try it now. The Chapter has adopted an new community service project of helping The Hope Cottage with their needs. Arizona Grand Chapter has designated the state service project to be crisis centers and houses around the state. We have provided necessary supplies and gloves, slippers, etc. for Christmas, and will be doing an ongoing project of supplying the house with intake bags which will consist of necessary toiletries to get the ladies and their children started out, such as shampoo, lotion, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, washcloth, baby powder, etc.

We would like to start out with 50 of these bags in January, and more as needed. If you would like to help with this project, please call Lois Davis at 286-1983, or any of the officers. I'm sure there will be other things they will need on an ongoing basis, so come help if you can.

We will have an initiation of January 22nd and that same evening will be an honor night for our very special organist, Georgia Moore, so please come be a sideliner to welcome our new member and to honor Georgia, who has so faithfully and beautifully served as the Chapter?s organist for somewhere around 35 years

Upcoming events:

Jan. 8 – Stated Meeting, honor our PGM, Mary O’Hara, & PGP, Howard Davis
Jan. 22 – Initiation, honor our Organist, Geor-gia Moore
Feb. 12 – Stated Meeting, Valentine’s Day
Feb. 26 – Stated Meeting, honor past Matrons and Patrons

Sister Mary O'Hara, PGM, Grand Canyon Chapter #4, came through her surgery just fine, and the surgeon was very pleased, he did a lamenectomy on 4 vertebrae, which is removing the bone on the top of the vertebrae to let the compressed nerve inside expand. Her leg pain is almost completely gone right now, her back pain will remain, there is not really anything they can do about that. She is still on a pain medication pump, but it looks hopeful that she will feel much better even after that is taken off. She is looking at about 6 weeks recovery time. Sister Mary came home from the hospital today.

Cards can be sent to Sister Mary at her home:
135 West Juniper Avenue
Flagstaff, Arizona 86004

Sister Mary and her family thank all for your calls and concerns.
